Find Clarity on Your Physiotherapy Journey!
Our FAQ page answers all your questions about Medxphysio, from scheduling appointments to understanding treatment options.

GENERAL

What is a physiotherapist?

A physiotherapist is a university-trained healthcare professional specialising in movement and recovery. They possess extensive knowledge in diagnosing and treating injuries, creating personalised exercise programmes for rehabilitation, and guiding patients towards preventing future injuries. Their expertise extends to various health and fitness areas, helping individuals achieve optimal well-being and reach their movement goals.

Is a physiotherapist a doctor?

While both physiotherapists and doctors play crucial roles in healthcare, they have distinct qualifications and areas of expertise.

Doctors:  Hold a medical degree and are qualified to diagnose various illnesses and prescribe medications.

Physiotherapists:  Complete university training in physiotherapy and specialise in movement and recovery. They diagnose and treat musculoskeletal issues like injuries, pain, and movement limitations. They may also prescribe exercise programs and other forms of physical therapy. Sometimes, a doctor might refer you to a physiotherapist for treatment related to a specific injury or condition.

APPOINTMENTS

How do I make an appointment?

To make an appointment you can either call 07784970840 or you can click book now on our website which will take you to an online booking system. You could also use the chat icon on the right side to write to us or visit the Contact page here.

Is there a deposit I should pay?

To ensure the best possible experience for all our patients, Medxphysio requires a £50 deposit to secure your appointment slot. This deposit applies to each appointment within your personalised treatment plan. You can read our deposit policy here.

Why do I need to pay a deposit?

Why ask for a deposit for the following main reasons:

Reduced "No-Shows":
Deposits help us minimise the number of missed appointments, allowing us to dedicate valuable time to patients who are committed to their treatment journey.

Lower Costs for Everyone:  Unfilled appointments create unnecessary costs for the practice. Deposits help us maintain efficient operations and keep overall treatment costs manageable. By working together, we can ensure a smooth and efficient experience for everyone at Medxphysio.  If you have any questions regarding our deposit policy, please don't hesitate to contact us.

What should I bring to
my first appointment?

For your first physiotherapy appointment at Medxphysio, please bring:

- A valid health insurance card or proof of your insurance allowance (if applicable).
- A list of any medications you're currently taking.
- Any relevant medical reports or referral information (if you have them).
- Comfortable clothing that allows for easy movement of the affected area.

What to wear to my
physiotherapy appointment?

For your physiotherapy appointment at Medxphysio, we recommend wearing comfortable, loose-fitting clothing that allows access to the area being treated. Shorts are recommended for leg or hip issues, while a tank top or loose-fitting shirt is ideal for neck or shoulder concerns.

* Please note sports bras are often difficult for therapists to work around and therefore vests with flexible straps that can be moved are advised.

Can I bring someone with me?

At Medxphysio, we want you to feel comfortable during your treatment. That's why you're welcome to bring a friend or family member to your appointment as a chaperone.

Some folks need a chaperone:
Kids:
Parents or guardians must come with children for their appointments.
Need a little extra help? If you need someone to assist you due to accessibility needs, let us know beforehand. We can chat about if a chaperone would be beneficial.

Otherwise, feel free to bring someone along if it makes you feel better!
- They can watch your treatment.
- We'll always keep things private.
- Any questions about chaperones? Just ask!

How long will my appointment be?

We offer 30 and 60 minute appointments. We advise booking a 60 minute appointment for your first session so that the therapist can perform a thorough assessment and treatment. The therapist will then make recommendations for further sessions.

Insurance Coverage: Please note, some insurance plans only cover 30-minute physiotherapy appointments.

What happens at my first appointment?

Your first appointment at Medxphysio is an important step towards your recovery journey! Here's what you can expect:

Getting to Know You:
Our physiotherapist will start by asking detailed questions about your current condition. This includes:

How your injury happened (if applicable): Understanding the cause helps tailor the treatment plan.
Medications you're taking: Certain medications can interact with physiotherapy treatments.
Past tests, investigations, or treatments: Knowing your medical history helps create a comprehensive picture.

Thorough Assessment: Following the discussion, the physiotherapist will perform a physical assessment. This may involve:

Observing your movement: This helps identify potential limitations and movement patterns.
Performing specific tests: These tests assess strength, flexibility, and range of motion related to your condition.

By combining these steps, your physiotherapist will gain a deeper understanding of your unique situation and create a personalised treatment plan to get you back on track.

How many physiotherapy visits
will I need?

Determining the exact number of sessions you'll need can be challenging at the outset. This is because the optimal number depends on several factors:

Complexity of your condition:  Some injuries or conditions require more intensive treatment plans than others.
Your body's response to treatment: Individual healing rates vary, influencing the needed treatment duration.

However, during your initial consultation, our physiotherapist will create a personalised plan and provide an estimated number of sessions. They will continuously monitor your progress and adjust the plan as needed, ensuring you receive the most effective treatment for optimal recovery.

Here at Medxphysio,
open communication is key. Feel free to discuss any questions or concerns you have about your treatment plan throughout your journey.

Do I have to be referred by a doctor?

The good news is that you don't necessarily need a doctor's referral to see a physiotherapist at Medxphysio! We can assess and treat a wide range of conditions without a referral. However, health insurance coverage can vary. Some insurers require a doctor's referral for full coverage of physiotherapy fees.

Here's what we recommend:
Check with your health insurer: Contact your insurance provider to understand their specific policy regarding physiotherapy coverage and any referral requirements.

Schedule a consultation: Book an appointment with us regardless. We can discuss your condition and treatment options, and help you navigate the insurance aspects if needed.

By working together, we can ensure you get the physiotherapy care you need.

How do I cancel an appointment?

To cancel or change an appointment you can either call us on 07784970840 or click cancel on your booking confirmation email. This will allow you to cancel or rebook.

A friendly reminder about our deposit policy: to ensure we can best serve all our patients, appointments need to be cancelled at least 24 hours in advance.

Why the 24-hour notice?

With enough notice, we can reschedule your appointment for a time that works better for you, without affecting your deposit. However, late cancellations (less than 24 hours' notice) prevent someone else from utilising that time slot. In these cases, your deposit will be used to cover the associated costs of the missed appointment.

For more details: You can find a more detailed explanation of our deposit policy on our website here.

Can I stop treatment at any time?

At Medxphysio, we empower you to make informed decisions about your health. You absolutely have the right to stop your treatment at any time. However, it's crucial to understand the potential impact of interrupting the planned treatment course:

Long-Term Results: Our physiotherapy plans are designed for lasting improvement. Some initial effects might be temporary, requiring continued sessions to solidify the benefits. Stopping treatment early could limit the long-term success.

Alternative Approaches: If the treatment isn't meeting your expectations, let your physiotherapist know! We can explore different techniques to achieve your desired results.

Taking a Break? The option to return to physiotherapy at your convenience is always open.  Please note that if this break exceeds 6 weeks, your physiotherapist may need to conduct a brief re-evaluation of your initial assessment before restarting treatment. This ensures we continue on the same path towards your recovery.

* Important to Remember:  Stopping treatment before completion is entirely at your own risk. Medxphysio cannot be held liable for any potential worsening of your condition due to this interruption.

What if physiotherapy isn't
helping me?

If the treatment plan isn't helping you then raise these concerns with your physiotherapist who will discuss your progress. If you have a long-standing injury or persistent symptoms, it may take some time to make improvements.

Your physiotherapist may well discuss your case with another senior practitioner colleague and explain their recommendations to you.

INSURANCE

How do I know if
my insurance covers physiotherapy?

Understanding your insurance coverage for physical therapy is important. Here are a few ways to find out:

Check with your insurance provider directly. This is the best way to get the most accurate and up-to-date information about your specific plan and coverage details. You can usually find your insurance provider's contact information on your insurance card or online. We also have a list of helpful links on our website here.

We can assist (if applicable): While we can't definitively confirm your coverage, we may be able to help you gather information from your insurance provider upon your request.

Confirm your coverage yourself.  Ultimately, it's best to confirm your coverage details directly with your insurance provider to avoid any surprises.

Remember, coverage can vary. Some insurance plans may require a doctor's referral for full coverage, while others might just need a phone consultation.

Let's work together! Schedule a consultation with us, and we can discuss your condition and treatment options. We'll be happy to assist you in any way we can to navigate the insurance aspects of your physiotherapy care. Also, you can read more about our insurance policy here.
